Bay Area COVID-19 Tracker
The Bay Area COVID-19 Tracker, or BACT for short, is a COVID-19 tracking tool specific to the Bay Area. As covered in the Pleasanton Patch, Pleasanton Weekly, and Kron4, the tracker was one of the first websites with aggregated real-time information across the Bay Area.
Unlike similar projects around the same time which provided state-level information, BACT cross-referenced a variety of different endpoints and individual reports from websites to create a more accurate and in-depth resource.
Additionally, the website provides information about:
- Information overview page with locally sourced news, updated in real-time
- Interactive map with visual viral representations
- Historical infection and mortality trends for each Bay Area county
- Health, Resources, and FAQ center for users to further educate themselves (NB: this information was originally more useful when the Bay Area had less than 1500 cases)
To date, the site has hundreds of thousands of visits, and has hopefully provided our community with an accurate way to stay updated on current trends.
The process in creating BACT, through my startup Nize System, was a great learning experience. We managed to create the entire application in about two weeks (with additional time for ensuring reliable information given the context of the situation). During that time, I had time to create new UI/UX designs, work on my website responsiveness, and become much more educated on COVID-19 itself. Overall, it was a fantastic opportunity and allowed us to explore how technology can influence public health.
